Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway
A survey crew under George Mercer Dawson labelled the local creek in 1879, and the farming hamlet that grew beside it took the same name. Homestead grants after 1912 sped settlement; stores, hotels, and a co-op made Dawson Creek a Peace River Country business centre by the early 1920s.
When the Northern Alberta Railways terminus and later the Alaska Highway arrived, the town became Mile 0 for northbound travellers. That marker still draws road-trippers aiming for the Yukon and Alaska.
