Wheat City on the Assiniboine
Brandon sits on the Assiniboine River about 214 km west of Winnipeg, and locals still call it the Wheat City for good reason. It grew as a CPR junction and commercial hub for the Westman Region, then kept that role as farms, food processing, and rail freight piled up around it.
The railway skipped favoured river towns like Rapid City and landed here instead in the early 1880s. Brandon incorporated in 1882, and today it anchors west Manitoba with Brandon University, Assiniboine College, and CFB Shilo just down the road.

It is located on the banks of the Assiniboine River in Western Manitoba, approximately 214 kilometres (133 mi) west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and 120 kilometres (75 mi) east of the Saskatchewan provincial border.
