Steinbach

Mennonite roots, Eastman hub

Steinbach in brief

Steinbach began in 1874 when Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from Ukraine settled the East Reserve after Treaty 1 opened farmland southeast of Winnipeg. Descendants still shape the city, which is now Manitoba's third-largest and the biggest community in the Eastman region.

Agriculture came first. Then Steinbach turned into a regional trading centre for about 50,000 people, with banks, car lots, shops, and plants filling in beside the old farm grid. Mennonite Heritage Village keeps a working windmill spinning so the founding story stays visible.
