Portage la Prairie in brief

Portage la Prairie takes its name from a French phrase for hauling a canoe overland. Indigenous travellers and fur traders used a roughly 25 km portage between the Assiniboine River and Lake Manitoba long before the town appeared.

In 1738 La Vérendrye built Fort La Reine nearby as a fur post and jump-off for western travel. The fort burned in 1759, but the crossing stuck. Later settlers fought Assiniboine floods until the Portage Diversion sent high water north to Lake Manitoba, and Environment Canada still ranks the place among Canada's sunniest warm-season spots.
