Winkler in brief

Winkler is the Pembina Valley's largest city, about 100 km southwest of Winnipeg and a short hop from twin city Morden. Mennonite settlers reached the West Reserve in 1876 on land that had been Anishinaabe territory under Treaty 1.

Lumberman and politician Valentine Winkler founded the village in 1892 after coaxing the CPR to lay a spur for his Mennonite customers. Incorporation followed in 1906, and floods in 1916, 1917, 1933, and 1966 are still part of local lore. Today Winkler ranks among Manitoba's fastest-growing cities as a farm, shop, and industry hub.
