Sydney in brief

Sydney was founded by the British in 1785 on Cape Breton's east coast, became a city in 1904, and joined the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in 1995. Coal and steel long defined the waterfront, after earlier wartime raids and naval scraps marked the same shore.

Cruise ships now meet a 60-foot fiddle on the boardwalk, a playful nod to ceilidh culture. Nearby Sydney Mines keeps Coal Age plant fossils at the Cape Breton Fossil Centre, so the industrial underground still has a museum voice.
