Kentville

Ford town in the Annapolis Valley

Kentville in brief

Kentville grew at a shallow ford on the Cornwallis River, where tides from the Minas Basin stop sailing ships and roads fan out across the Annapolis Valley. Mi'kmaq speakers knew the spot as Obsitquetchk.

Acadian farmers diked the marshes against Fundy tides and created the deep soils that still feed valley orchards. The bridge that replaced the ford made Kentville the crossroads of the valley, and it remains the most populous town in the region.
