New Glasgow in brief

New Glasgow sits on the East River of Pictou where Scottish settlers, including passengers from the ship Hector in 1773, took up land in the late 1700s. Deacon Thomas Fraser settled the head of navigation in 1784, and the place took the name New Glasgow in 1809.

Coal discoveries upriver turned the riverhead into a shipping and manufacturing town linked to Pictou Harbour and the Northumberland Strait. It remains the centre of Nova Scotia's fourth-largest urban area, still reading as a Scottish industrial cousin on Atlantic Canada's north shore.
