Middle Lake Road Wellfield / Sydney Wellfield (fractured bedrock; ~11 production wells)
Cape Breton Regional Municipality operates seven distinct supply areas. Sydney area is the Middle Lake Road Wellfield; other CBRM communities use separate surface plants (Pottle Lake, MacAskill Brook, Waterford/Kilkenny, Kelly Lake) or small community wells.
Sydney abandoned its old five-lakes surface supply for the Middle Lake Road wellfield in 1996—so Sydney taps are groundwater while Northside neighbours still drink Pottle Lake surface water from a membrane plant.
CBRM Sydney Water Treatment Plant (Middle Lake Road Wellfield)
CBRM lists a distinct Sydney treatment plant serving Sydney, Coxheath, Westmount, Sydney River, Grand Lake Road, Mira Road, Membertou, South Bar, Prime Brook, and Pine Tree Park. Wellfield commissioned 1996 to replace Sydney’s former five-lakes surface supply. Pottle Lake membrane plant serves Northside only—not downtown Sydney.
