Kingston

Limestone City at three waterways

Kingston in brief

Kingston sits where Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence, and the Cataraqui River meet at the south end of the Rideau Canal. Nicknamed the Limestone City for its heritage stone buildings, it grew from the Indigenous place name Cataraqui into the King's Town honouring George III.

Kingston Penitentiary, once Canada's most notorious maximum-security prison, now offers guided tours led in part by former guards. The waterfront still feels like a meeting place of rivers, lake, and canal.
