John Galt's Royal City
Guelph, the Royal City, sits about 70 kilometres west of downtown Toronto where Highways 6 and 7 meet. Scottish novelist John Galt founded it in the 1820s as Canada Company headquarters, laying out squares and broad streets on former Six Nations reserve land.
A 1975 bylaw still protects views of the Gothic Revival Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate. Downtown also hides Garbasaurus, a 647-pound trash dinosaur whose weight matches the litter pulled from local rivers in the first cleanup year.
