Courtenay

Comox Valley city on a 4,000-year shoreline

Courtenay in brief

Coast Salish fishers worked the Courtenay River estuary for at least 4,000 years, calling the gentle climate and rich waters kw'umuxws, plentiful, later anglicized to Comox. Pentlatch people lived on Comox Bay at first contact; Island Comox speakers held neighbouring shores farther north.

Courtenay is now the only city and largest community in the Comox Valley, about 28,000 strong and seat of the regional district. Comox sits a few kilometres east, Cumberland a short hop southwest, and the estuary still sets the local mood.
