Wasaga Beach

Freshwater beach with a wartime past

Wasaga Beach in brief

Wasaga Beach stretches along the world's longest freshwater beach on Nottawasaga Bay, about 150 kilometres north of Toronto. The name shortens Nottawasaga, an Algonquin warning about Iroquois raiders at the river mouth; Huron-Wendat peoples lived here before 1649.

During the War of 1812 the mouth of the Nottawasaga mattered for British supply routes. Cars parked right on the sand by the 1920s, and summer crowds have been part of the town's rhythm ever since.
