Ontario
Big Nickel country under three roads
Greater Sudbury is Northern Ontario's most populous city and Ontario's largest by area, a single-tier municipality on Ojibwe land known as N'Swakamok, where the three roads meet. Local chiefs signed the Robinson Huron Treaty in 1850, sharing a vast tract with the Crown.
Mining built the modern city. The Big Nickel is a nine-metre stainless-steel 1951 five-cent coin, and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory once sat more than a mile underground in a nickel mine.
