Little Thames grows into Shakespeare town

Stratford in brief

Stratford sits on the Avon River in Perth County farm country settled by English, Irish, Scottish, and German immigrants from the 1820s onward. Developers called the market centre Little Thames until an 1835 post office took the name Stratford.

By 1846 the Gazetteer counted about 200 people with mills, taverns, and trades already humming. Today the theatre festival puts Shakespeare on the same riverbanks, and The Little Prince Cinema is a quirky downtown favourite.
