Sarnia

The Rapids renamed for Guernsey

Sarnia in brief

Sarnia sits where Lake Huron empties into the St. Clair River across from Port Huron, Michigan, the largest Canadian city on Lake Huron. La Salle called the harbour The Rapids; villagers later took Sarnia, Latin for Guernsey, after Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Colborne's Channel Island home.

More than 60 chemical plants and oil refineries cluster in the riverside stretch known as Chemical Valley. That industrial shoreline still defines Canada's side of the bluewater border.
