Port Hope

Smith's Creek becomes a Ganaraska harbour

Port Hope in brief

Port Hope sits at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on Lake Ontario in Northumberland County, between Toronto and Kingston. Cayuga and Mississauga peoples lived here; a 1778 fur post called Smith's Creek preceded Loyalist settlers who arrived after 1793.

Trinity College School opened in 1865 and remains a private landmark. Downtown's heritage main street and harbour still face the lake that made the town.
