Scott's Plains to canoe capital
Peterborough sits on the Otonabee River about 125 kilometres northeast of Toronto as the seat of Peterborough County. Samuel de Champlain passed through in 1615; Adam Scott built a sawmill and gristmill at Jackson Creek in 1819, and Scott's Plains grew from that footing.
The Canadian Canoe Museum here holds the largest canoe collection in the world. Lift locks on the Trent-Severn Waterway still move boats through town with Victorian engineering flair.
