Owen Sound

Waterfall city on a Georgian Bay inlet

Owen Sound in brief

Owen Sound is Grey County's seat at the mouths of the Pottawatomi and Sydenham Rivers on an inlet of Georgian Bay. Ojibwe people knew the area as Gchi-wiigwedong; surveyor William Fitzwilliam Owen named the inlet for his brother Admiral Edward Owen in 1815.

Charles Rankin established Sydenham around 1840, and by 1846 about 150 people shared a sawmill and gristmill. Short drives still lead to the waterfalls that draw most visitors today.
