Oshawa

Crossing place that built Canada's cars

Oshawa in brief

Oshawa lines Lake Ontario about 60 kilometres east of downtown Toronto, the eastern anchor of the Golden Horseshoe and Durham Region's largest city. Its name comes from the Ojibwa aazhawe, the crossing place, a fur-trade transfer point where Mississauga canoes met voyagers.

Robert McLaughlin founded the McLaughlin Carriage Company here in 1876, the shop that grew into a cornerstone of Canadian auto making. That industrial streak still shapes how the lakeshore city talks about itself.
