Midland

Railway terminus on 30,000 Islands

Midland in brief

Midland anchors southern Georgian Bay at the end of the 30,000 Islands, the economic hub of Huronia with a hospital, airport, and summer cottage crowds that push seasonal numbers past 100,000. The Midland Railway chose Mundy's Bay as its terminus in 1871 and the townsite was surveyed soon after.

Shipping, lumber, and rail built the village after 1878. Nearby Martyrs' Shrine and the Big Chute Marine Railway on the Trent-Severn Waterway remain two of the region's most visited landmarks.
