Kenora

Once Rat Portage on Lake of the Woods

Kenora in brief

Kenora sits on Lake of the Woods near the Manitoba border, about 208 kilometres east of Winnipeg. Ojibwe territory first, it was long called Rat Portage from Wazhashk-Onigam, roughly the muskrat portage, before the modern name stuck.

French explorers reached the lake in the late 1600s, and Pierre de La Verendrye's Fort Saint Charles followed in 1732. South of town, White Otter Castle is a three-storey red-pine log house built alone by trapper Jimmy McOuat.
