Kawartha Lakes in brief

Kawartha Lakes is a mostly rural single-tier municipality in Central Ontario, second only to Greater Sudbury in land area among Ontario's single-tier cities. Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, and Omemee are the main population centres among cottage-country lakes.

The name comes from Ka-wa-tha, coined in 1895 by Martha Whetung of Curve Lake First Nation to mean land of reflections; tourism promoters later styled Kawartha as bright waters and happy lands. Anishinaabeg, Huron-Wendat, and Haudenosaunee peoples lived here long before the modern city.
