Hawkesbury

Ottawa River mill town that stayed bilingual

Hawkesbury in brief

Hawkesbury hugs the Ottawa River in Prescott and Russell, linked to Grenville, Quebec, by the Long-Sault Bridge, the only interprovincial crossing east of Ottawa. About 70 percent of residents speak both English and French, making it one of Ontario's most bilingual towns.

Founded in 1798 and named for Baron Hawkesbury, it grew around a sawmill that Americans Thomas Mears and David Pattee built in 1805. Napoleonic timber demand fed a boom that left millworks sprawling along the lower Ottawa.
