Elliot Lake

Uranium boom, then a second act

Elliot Lake in brief

Elliot Lake sits in Algoma District north of Lake Huron, midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Ojibwa people used the lakeshore seasonally before a planned mining town rose in 1955 after uranium finds, once billed as the uranium capital of the world.

Boom-and-bust cycles swung the population from over 25,000 down toward 6,600 before the city reinvented itself around retirement living, tourism, forest work, and mine reclamation. Nearby Mississagi Provincial Park offers rare backcountry hiking in Ontario's park system.
