Collingwood

Georgian Bay shipyard turned ski town

Collingwood in brief

Collingwood sits on Nottawasaga Bay at the southern tip of Georgian Bay, under the Niagara Escarpment and the Blue Mountains. Petun villages once lined the escarpment; settlers and freed Black families arrived in the 1840s, and the town incorporated in 1858, named for Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood.

The Northern Railway reached the harbour in 1855, feeding shipbuilding and grain elevators. Today winter skiing and summer cave hiking keep the waterfront busy year-round.
