Cobourg

Loyalist harbour that dreamed big

Cobourg in brief

Cobourg is Northumberland County's seat on Lake Ontario, about 95 kilometres east of Toronto. Mississauga peoples lived here first; United Empire Loyalists founded the settlements that became Cobourg in 1798, renaming Hamilton for a royal wedding in 1819.

By the 1830s a fine harbour made it a regional centre, and Victoria Hall opened in 1860 when some locals hoped the town might become Upper Canada's capital. Nearby Colborne still draws highway travellers to the Big Apple roadside stop.
