Chatham-Kent

Thames River dockyard country

Chatham-Kent in brief

Chatham-Kent is a mostly rural single-tier municipality in Southwestern Ontario, created in 1998 when Chatham, Wallaceburg, Dresden, Tilbury, and many neighbouring towns joined under one roof. Chatham itself began as a naval dockyard in 1792 at the fork of the Thames River and McGregor's Creek.

The land was traditional territory of Odawa, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Wyandot nations before McKee's Purchase in 1790. In Dresden, the Josiah Henson Museum tells the Dawn settlement story that helped shape Uncle Tom's Cabin.
