Halfway city on Elk River
Red Deer in brief
Blackfoot, Plains Cree, and Stoney peoples used the Calgary and Edmonton Trail long before fur traders showed up. Cree called the river Waskasoo Seepee, Elk River; Europeans borrowed the Eurasian red deer label for North American elk and named the town after that mix-up.
Leonard Gaetz gave the Calgary and Edmonton Railway land for a bridge and townsite, trains arrived in 1891, and the older crossing upstream faded. Sitting midway on the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor in aspen parkland, Red Deer still works as central Alberta's service hub.
