Okotoks

Named for the rock west of town

Okotoks in brief

Okotoks comes from ohkotok, the Blackfoot word for rock, a nod to Big Rock, the largest glacial erratic in the Foothills Erratics Train about seven kilometres west of town. Blackfoot travellers used that boulder as a landmark for the Sheep River crossing on the old Macleod Trail between Fort Macleod and Fort Calgary.

Stopping houses drew settlers, a sawmill arrived in 1891, and the railway finished the stagecoach era the same year. Today Okotoks is one of Alberta's largest towns, a Sheep River neighbour about 38 kilometres south of downtown Calgary.
