Lethbridge in brief
First Nations knew the Oldman River banks by many names tied to steep slopes and coal. Whisky traders built Fort Whoop-Up nearby in 1869; the North-West Mounted Police arrived in 1874 to shut that trade down. Drift mines followed, and the North Western Coal and Navigation Company's president, William Lethbridge, gave the city its English name.
Rail arrived in 1885, coal peaked through the First World War, and the last local mine closed in 1957. The Lethbridge Viaduct still leaps about 1.6 kilometres across the valley, roughly 96 metres above the river floor, while the Galt Museum keeps the coal-and-whisky chapters on the shelf.
