High River

The Crossing on the Highwood

High River in brief

Blackfoot people called the site Ispitzee, the place of high trees along running water. After Treaty 7, settlers gathered at a convenient Highwood River ford known simply as The Crossing; the Calgary and Edmonton Railway arrived in 1892, and the town took its name from the river.

High River incorporated as a village in 1901 and a town in 1906, with rancher Daniel Edward Riley as first mayor. An early air station and a wartime flying school boosted the local economy, and the Highwood still writes flood chapters into living memory, including the costly 2013 Alberta floods.
