Hills where peace was made

Wetaskiwin in brief

Wetaskiwin takes its name from a Cree phrase for the hills where peace was made, remembering a battle site between Cree and Blackfoot peoples. The Calgary and Edmonton Railway made it Siding 16 in 1890; surveyors restored the peace-place name in 1892, and Scandinavian settlers soon filled the townsite.

Incorporation followed in 1901, a courthouse and water tower rose around 1909, and after the Second World War the airport became home to the Reynolds-Alberta Museum. Western Canada still hums the old dealer slogan: cars cost less in Wetaskiwin.
