Summerside

West end service centre

Summerside in brief

Summerside is PEI's second city and the main service hub for the island's west end, stitching together Summerside, St. Eleanors, and Wilmot. Mi'kmaq people knew the shore as Eptek, a hot place used for summer hunting and fishing.

Acadians settled Malpeque and Bedeque bays between 1728 and 1758 before the Expulsion. British lots followed Samuel Holland's 1765 survey, and the harbour town grew into a shipbuilding and trade centre. On a clear day the Confederation Bridge's 12.9 km span still looks like the island's steel handshake with the mainland.
