Spruce Grove

Grain stop west of Edmonton

Spruce Grove in brief

Cree and Sarcee peoples moved seasonally through the land that became Spruce Grove long before homesteaders arrived around 1879. Early buildings included a general store, livery, blacksmith, hotel, and church. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway built a station in 1908 and turned the spot into a busy grain-trading centre.

Village status came and went (1907, dissolved 1916, back in 1955), then town status in 1971 and city status in 1986. Today it sits about 11 kilometres west of Edmonton beside Stony Plain, home to Horizon Stage and the shared TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre.
