Grand Falls-Windsor

Company town at the falls

Grand Falls-Windsor in brief

Grand Falls-Windsor sits on the Exploits River in central Newfoundland. Lieutenant John Cartwright named the waterfall Grand Falls in 1768, but the land stayed quiet until the railway and newsprint money arrived.

In 1905 Alfred Harmsworth (Lord Northcliffe) founded Grand Falls as a Garden City-style company town to secure paper for his newspapers. Windsor grew beside it, and the two amalgamated in 1991. The Exploits Valley Salmon Festival still marks summer on the river that started it all.
