Why this system matters
Edmonton operates one of Canada's most distinctive municipal drinking-water systems. EPCOR’s source watershed covers tens of thousands of square kilometres upstream to the Rockies; the utility works with upstream landholders on watershed management because most of that land sits outside its ownership.
On the OpenStats water atlas, Edmonton carries a direct-tier hardness reading and an OpenStats letter grade of A (Excellent). Among 52 direct-tier cities on the atlas, Edmonton ranks #11 for hardness at 177 mg/L (hard). The Alberta average across tracked municipalities is about 178 mg/L.
Supply and treatment
Source type on the atlas: surface. Named source waters include North Saskatchewan River.
Treatment assets named in OpenStats supply research: E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant (Upstream of much of the urban footprint; submerged mid-river intake with fish-return design. Larger of the two EPCOR plants serving Edmonton and capital-region wholesale customers.); Rossdale Water Treatment Plant (Near city centre; river intake experiences more urban stormwater influence. Longstanding plant site with continuous operation since early 1900s (current works mid-century).).
EPCOR treats water and supplies Edmonton plus regional commissions (Parkland, Southwest, Northeast and others). On-site plant reservoirs buffer demand before high-lift pumps feed the transmission and municipal distribution networks.
OpenStats score and ranking context
OpenStats grades drinking water A through D using Health Canada guideline limits on pH, lead, fluoride, chlorine, and turbidity, with a B grade when health parameters comply but hardness exceeds 180 mg/L or turbidity sits above the typical 1 NTU target. Edmonton scores A on the current row: Excellent.
Hardness 177 mg/L as CaCO₃ is from a published municipal source (2024). That figure is 1 mg/L below the Alberta average (178 mg/L across 51 tracked municipalities).

What is measured vs estimated
OpenStats labels every parameter row. Hardness on direct-tier cities comes from a cited municipal or regional report. pH is only treated as measured when the same verified source published it. Lead, fluoride, chlorine, and turbidity on this page remain atlas seed values unless the data_source field names a municipal lab report.
For Edmonton, hardness is verified from EPCOR Edmonton annual water quality report (2024). pH is from the same verified source. Other health parameters in the table below are atlas seed rows; the municipal reports carry current compliance results.
